A Guide to Avoiding Heat

By Darren Hong

After one of the biggest heat waves this summer, you may be wondering how you should stay cool. Not to worry! With the help of this guide, you’ll be chilling!

For a quick and easy way to cool down with friends at the pool, check out my article from the beginning of the month. With that out of the way, here are some ways to avoid the heat.

First off, wearing loose, lightweight clothing is a key factor in decreasing heat, as it allows your body to cool yourself off naturally. Another detail you should consider is the material of clothing, as fabrics such as linen and cotton are better suited for summer wear, as they allow for breathability for your skin.

Second, drinking lots of fluids is important to preventing dehydration. The main signs of dehydration include thirst, infrequent urination, dark-colored urine, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion. If you’re heading out of a trail, remember to bring water!

Third, while on the trail, don’t be afraid of taking a break, especially during the middle of the day, when the sun is at its peak. Ideally, you want to find a shady area, such as a tree, to rest.

Finally, according to the Mayo Clinic, it can take several weeks to get used to hot weather, so take your time adjusting! Limit the time you spend outside until your body is used to the weather.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you avoid the heat and continue to enjoy outdoor activities. Happy hiking!
